Oxyuris is a well-known worm which in the past has been easily controlled by the same worming programme that is used for the control of the small red worm. Unfortunately however, we have recently become aware that this is no longer the case and that Oxyuris requires its own separate control programme.
Signs: Chronic itching at hind end, rubbing against fences and stable walls. Sores and bald patches develop on tail and anal region as result of rubbing if left untreated
Looks most like? Sweet itch
Tests: Faecal Worm Egg count, Sellotape test around hindquarters/back passage. Sometimes the white adult worms (4cm long with one tapered end) can be seen at the back passage or in the faeces.
Treatment: 3 pronged approach
- Oral Ivomec wormer (trade name Eqvalan) at triple the recommended dose followed 1 week later by 5 day Panacur guard
- Once daily application of liquid Ivomec/Propylene glycol mixture to area surrounding back passage
- Hygiene: daily grooming starting at head and progressing to hind end before discarding brush for thorough cleaning/disinfection; removing bed from stable and power hosing floor and walls before putting in fresh bedding; poo picking in paddocks.
